Township Forest Invites Interaction

"We want a forest where children can be children. Where they can simply play in the mud."

A Unique Place for Young and Old

In Brakel, Belgium, elementary school students have planted more than 1,500 trees in the Sporenbos Forest. The forest, along with the adjacent piece of land, consists of four parts: a Nesting Forest for children with and without disabilities, a Tiny Forest with native deciduous trees, a Food Forest with edible plants and fruits, and a Nature Forest. The Sporenbos Forest was created through the efforts of the Rotary Club of Brakel-Zwalmvallei and GoodPlanet Belgium. Peter Becaus from the Rotary Club co-coordinates the project: "We want children to be able to play in nature again. To come here and find peace, without screens or other distractions. Just playing with each other, in the forest and in the mud. To reconnect them with nature."

Buy a Tree

To involve more people in the project and build financial reserves to further invest in the project, interested individuals can now purchase their own tree. Peter explains, "You can now buy a tree from us, and we will personalize it for you. Through a QR code on the tree sign, you'll find the name and photo of the person who purchased the tree. It's a beautiful gift for births, memorials, or as support from a (grand)parent for (grand)children at school."

Laura Bruyninckx assisted Peter with the technical aspects and discovered Plantsoon during her search for labels: "We were specifically looking for tree signs. The Plantsoon signs have the additional advantage that each tree has a digital passport. The labels will still be readable within 20 years. Moreover, buyers can also see exactly where their tree is located in the forest via the map on our Plantsoon visit page."
