Mount a label on a tree trunk with a screw set
For trees with a sufficiently thick trunk. The spring keeps the label away from the bark, so the tree can keep growing without swallowing it.
In the box
- Stainless steel screw
- Spring
- 2 washers
- Your label (S-tag: 1 set, M-, L- and XL-labels: 2 sets)
You'll need
- Screwdriver with a TX20 (Torx) bit
- Your phone, to scan the label
Step by step
-
Check the label
Scan the QR code and make sure it opens the page of the tree you're standing next to. Easier to fix now than after mounting.
-
Choose the spot
Pick a smooth, healthy part of the trunk on the side that faces the path, at a height visitors can easily reach with their phone. Avoid wounds, knots and spots where a branch will grow over the label.
-
Assemble the set
Slide the parts onto the screw in this order: the label, a washer, the spring and the second washer. The label sits just under the screw head.
-
Screw it into the trunk
Turn the screw into the trunk with the TX20 screwdriver. Stop while the spring is still loose, so it can compress as the trunk grows.
Don't screw it in all the way. The space between the label and the bark is what keeps the tree from growing over it.
-
Add the second set if needed
M-, L- and XL-labels have two mounting holes. Mount the second set the same way and keep the label level.
-
Scan it once more
Stand where a visitor would stand and scan. If the camera struggles, check that the label hangs straight and isn't in deep shade.
Common questions
How thick does the trunk need to be?
Use a screw set only on mature trees with a solid trunk. For young or thin trees, use a stake or mount the label on the support pole.
Do I need to check the label over the years?
Yes, have a look every few years. When the spring is almost fully pressed together, unscrew it a few turns to give the tree room again.
Can I use a screw set on a square tag?
No. The square tag has no mounting holes. Glue it onto a flat, solid surface instead.
Can I reuse a screw set?
Yes. All parts are stainless steel, so you can unscrew the set and use it again for another label.
